return to heriot watt

26 august
friday.

tried to get participants - another low day of five.

then went to heriot watt (via a long stop at the post office to mail a book i sold on amazon, yay 10 pounds for me). hadn't been to campus in a loooong time at least two and a half weeks. it felt odd and long on the bus. and i hadn't seen/ met with adrian in even longer.

that was much needed. i was worried about meeting with him because of my low numbers of participants, but he was pleasantly enthusiastic about my numbers. contrary to my feelings of failing at getting people, he said otherwise. still need to get everyone on campus i can once school starts in a week or two. but i feel a bit more okay with my festival numbers.

discussed a few other things as well and it was great to actually get some feedback and discussion about some thoughts. just another demonstration of why i'm working with him. each time we meet, i'm glad he's my supervisor and i have a bit of renewed hope about doing this degree.

did discover i had made a few errors on my surveys online that i had to fix though. so that did deflate me a bit, but i fixed them and only about 20 or so had been completed for each of the 3 so that's not too bad. i just need so many people. as i told adrian, i feel as though i've just started more projects but haven't finished one of them. i want to finish at least one of them and move on. that'd be awesome. hopefully i'll get lots of people in september and then get something finished and written up completely.

did some data entry at my desk in the room. felt good to return to campus and meet with adrian. he's away next week but hopefully after that with the start of the year for the undergrads, i'll get onto campus daily to get some more people participating and writing done.

participants and after school club

22-25 august.

pretty much the same thing each day. attempt to get participants with dwindling numbers of possible people and then go to my job at the after school club. i'm trying to really learn a few kids names by interacting with them each day so hopefully i'll get everyone soon.

got interrogated to see if i was taliban by a troublemaker kid on tuesday. he's going to be a handful. and made a bracelet of beads and played cards with some girls on thursday. it's really not a hard job. group babysitting i've decided to classify it as.

did go to a cool book festival event on tuesday. unbound is what it was called. they're doing it every night and i wish i would have gone every night. it was music and readings mixed. heard about 5 pieces. and 3 were good. the last one was awesome. this lady's piece was about the sounds of the city becoming alive. really well done. i enjoyed that. think we're going to go to the one on monday as well which may be more stand up than readings but hopefully it'll also be good.

went to the pub on thursday with becky and brittany to celebrate becky's first day of college. i'm super excited for her to start college and a floristry programme. super neat and i'm proud of her for going to school and actively taking steps away from monkey bizness to create her future job dreams.

facebook wall play

21 august.
sunday.

tried to get some participants but there was hardly anyone even sitting in the courtyard. i think i got five before basically resigning to that fact for the day. so jane-marie and i went to go see a play that we had wanted to see.

it was based on a facebook exchange so i think it was the social media twist that drew us in. it was a two person show and well done in today's technology way. i enjoyed it.

also returned to tutoring after a long break. nice to do that again. and the mom said she'd be interested in continuing, which would be awesome. i like the family and it'd be nice to continue having a student.

20 august

saturday.

last monkey bizness shift. whoo. it was just like any other day a 9-4 on reception all day. but i suppose i did have a better attitude about it knowing i wouldn't have to do it again. even got a few surveys done by some coworkers.

becky pretty appropriately came to tell me my shift was done by saying 'thanks for working at monkey bizness' and then it seemed a bit odd. not really too much attachment to the job though so yeah. glad to be done with that.

decided to take advantage of the fringe festival go see some free comedy in the evening. jane-marie, brittany and i saw two different acts at espionage. that place is a maze of levels - truly a display of tenament living above and below ground in edinburgh (i hadn't been in there before). the comedy shows were alright. had some good moments but weren't great the whole way through. but it was free and nice to partake in the festival as an audience member and not just as someone trying to get people to do my research.

19 august

friday.

was able to get some participants and then go to monkey bizness. second to last shift. a long 1-close on a friday. but it was alright.

17 august

wednesday.

a full day.

i went to go get participants.
then i went to the first day of work. not too bad. the kids are mostly well behaved. we had snack. and i played some badminton. not too bad at all.

then we had a voucher to use at tex mex ii. so brittany, becky, and i had a lovely delicious catch up and mexican meal. mmmm that place is good. i just want to go all of the time.

festival things

16 august
tuesday.

went with jane-marie to get participants. had less luck than on the other day. so while i had hoped to get more i got about half as many. and the reality of getting many less than expected started to sink in ...sadly.

and it's a tiring long day to try to get people to fill out surveys. i originally thought that i'd just hang out all day and get people. that's really hard. after an hour or two, that's about all i can handle. with the high amount of rejections and incompletes and everything, it's rough.

met brittany at the book festival to hear neil gaiman speak. he's brittany's favorite author so she was pretty excited. and it was really good. i enjoyed it a lot. had to leave and not meet him though because i was also going with jane-marie to hear david sedaris speak.

interestingly, i had not seen anything from either the book or fringe festival, and then the two things were on the same day.

hearing david sedaris speak was awesome. he read a number of different pieces. and they were really good. really enjoyed one about china/ chinese food (from the guardian) and the i'm not running (from vanity fair) was also good. oh and excerpts from his journal - those were brilliant. even his taking a few questions at the end was also humorous to listen to.

and i'm glad that i can officially say i went to a fringe and book festival event.

new job

with the whole monkey bizness issue, job searching became more of a thing. i had applied to an after school group position before we found out we weren't going to get our pay and before we found out monkey bizness was for sale. but when i went for the interview, i actually cared a lot more about it as a potential job. being way more qualified than necessary for the job but limited by my student visa work limits, i was still offered the playworker position (couldn't be manager with the visa).

so i accepted the job offer with the stipulation that i would work 4 days a week and not 5. which the boss guy is fine with meaning i gave my notice at monkey bizness to be done at the end of the week ending the 21st of august.

and it meant that when i got back monday morning from the coach that i'd have to go to an orientation meeting.

15 august
monday.

so i'm now a part of the buckstone after school club staff. 6 people including me for around 40 or so kids. not a bad ratio at all. it's a bus ride away in the buckstone/morningside community. club is at a church that's a short walk from the primary school where we pick up the kids. the orientation wasn't much of anything which made me a little bit concerned for the first day, but i think that was just from my experience from teaching.

goodwood inline marathon adventure

14 august
sunday.

got up early to take the tube down to victoria train station. still felt pretty ill so i had pretty much resigned to dropping to the half marathon from the full. got on my train and there were a bunch of other skaters on board.

made friends with two polish people sitting across from me on the train. so i hung out with them for the day.

we got a taxi from the chichester train station to the race track. there were lots of people there. lots of roller derby girls. i guess more than half of the participants were roller derby folk. it was nice to be at a big event, since the london marathon in may was so small and only had the really fast people. this was more like the minnesota one with just lots of people out for the event. longboards and quad skates and even some wheelchairs.

the track has an active airfield in the middle which was interesting as planes landed and took off right above us as we skated around. for as ill as i was feeling in general, i actually felt alright skating. well until a marshall skated into me and knocked me to the ground. that was bad. i tumbled and rolled and am thankful i had a helmet on. that caused me head to pound, my arm to bleed, and my left leg to have a terrible pain.

so the half length marathon was to skate 5 laps. i skated the 5 and my gps said i had done just under 12 miles which isn't quite a true half. so for my own personal self i did a 6th lap - although at a much more relaxed pace. so i ended up skating a bit over 14 miles in an hour and ten minutes i think.

found out that i placed 7th, finishing in 56 minutes (results). quite excited to finish 7th out of 270 people. but it actually made me more angry, because the 6th place person was only a second faster and had i not fallen, i think i could have possibly placed 3rd which would have been amazing.

i didn't feel super accomplished on sunday (i didnt know about placing 7th) although i felt okay with only doing the half after the race marshall injured me. ive decided it's because the half distance length (13 miles) isn't a challenge distance wise now. not that i managed to skate the long distances while training this time around, but doing 8-10 miles doesn't make 13 that much more. a faster time is a challenge, but length wise, i want to do full marathon lengths. there is a difference (a big one) between the half and the full. this just means that i really want to do the full marathon next year. and at some point the double.

there were people who had never done a marathon sign up for the double. i don't think that's a smart move at all. but i think with training that's a possibility. i won't be placing anywhere near the top, but it'd be more of a challenge.

got a little medal which was nice. still sad the london one didn't have a medal.

the polish couple and i went to this american western themed restaurant after the race. sadly i still felt ill and therefore not really hungry or like i could eat. i had some curly fries and an mgd (because why not have an american beer). the restaurant was amusing. the waiter was dressed in boots, a hat, plaid shirt and bolo tie which all made for an atmosphere to feel like i could be in the states. until he opened his mouth and immediately it was juxtaposed with actually being in the south of england.
pretty amusing.

the polish couple was smarter with their return train time so they had to run to catch their train. i, on the other hand, had like 3 hours before my train. i walked through a bit of the town although my leg really hurt so i kind of stopped doing that. saw the cathedral and then didn't really know what to do.

wasn't hungry and felt ill so sitting at a restaurant wasn't a great option. i sat in the town for awhile and then at the train station (couldn't switch to an earlier train).

train ride back was fine and then had more time to sit and wait once i got into victoria and had to sit for my bus. didn't plan the timing well but in my defense i thought that brittany was going to be with me. met a man from ghana at the bus station. he lived in london but had studied in scotland and had lived a bunch of places. he was taking his family to disneyland paris but told me i was welcome to meet him in ghana once his family moves back there. made me want to travel even more.

the british are known for their queuing but somehow the folks bound for edinburgh missed the memo of standing and waiting in line. i've never seen a more intensely pushy bunch when trying to get onboard for the bus. crazy people. and then it was another overnight coach ride back to edinburgh

london day

13 august
saturday.

got in early to victoria station. had a disappointing bagel and rode the tube up to kristen. hadn't been to finsbury park (arsenal land) before. it's a nice looking neighborhood.

hung out and had breakfast with kristen. it was nice to catch up.

then i took the train & tube to meet abner and rachel for a show at the globe.

somehow got a bit turned around getting out of the tube station so i had a bit of a roundabout walk to st pauls and across the millennium bridge. got the tickets and then we had a nice like picnic lunch before the show. it was really nice to see abner and rachel again - hadn't seen them in just under a year.

saw anne boleyn. it was fantastic. really love seeing stuff at the globe. always amazing.

then i headed to trafalgar square to pop into the art museum for a minute.

and then went to oxford circus to meet kristen and john for dinner. we went to vapiano (same as last time, but i wanted pasta and it's good and not too expensive there). john hadnt been and there was a bit of a too loong sloow line to deal with. but the food was good. stuffed too full.

kristen and i watched a movie as a quiet night. it was another great london day.

12 august

friday.

went to work from 11-9. ugh. 10 hours of monkey bizness. although it was a quiet evening.

then had to go straight home and then to the bus station. they had two coaches so i was glad to get on the non-stopping bus to london. i had decided to bring the neck pillow thing to attempt to sleep more, but i don't think it helped much.

9-11 august

tuesday.

was angry to have to work all day because the sun was out but i couldn't go get participants.

wednesday & thursday.

raining all day so unable to go get participants.
was also felt like death on thursday. no good.

participants day 1

monday
8 august

went to the pleasance courtyard. jane-marie and i got about 60 people each. which was very encouraging. and after i went to school to make copies and go to the gym.

MPN

just signed my master promissory note so that makes taking out my loan official.
eek.
i mean that's a good thing. i'll be able to pay for school. but it's also a lot of money to repay.

one more thing checked off the list to do...

too bad it's been raining all day so i haven't been able to go get participants.
(as i'm pretty sure no one's going to be hanging out in the rain, and if they are, they're not going to be wanting to fill out questionnaires in the rain...ugh)

monkey bizness for sale

tuesday, 2 august.

had to open. so while putting the tables out with lisa, we came across a headless mouse. awesome. great start to the day.

then it was a rainy day. so it was busy with crazy queues at reception. and angry people. and that's just not how i want to spend the day.

made it through 7 hours and 54 minutes of an 8 hour shift and then was called into the office for an unknown reason. walked in to tears and solemn faces to find that monkey bizness has no money (companywide) and is being put up for sale. which explains why we hadn't been paid yet and that they're struggling to find the money to pay us.

awesome. job searching just got more real. real fast.

that mouse was an omen for the day.

staff meeting

monday, 1 august.

had a staff meeting. was told to be there a half hour before it started, so that wasn't too great. especially because it seemed to last forever. not a great meeting at all. and long.

a group of us went to the pub after for a bit. and then i went with gareth out to sneaky pete's for awhile. sadly i couldnt stay out so just as the music was turning to dubstep and good, i had to leave to be able to sleep before having to go back to work. but at least it was a bit of fun. gotta say, i am enjoying the dubstep; wasn't familiar with it prior to edinburgh, and would like to hear more of it. brittany and i had been talking about how we don't have a consistently good place to go out that we know of here, and i think the closest might be sneaky pete's from the limited experience i've had. but apparently i have no clue what's about to happen with the festival coming to town.

a sunday funday fail

31 july.

tried to have a bit of sunday funday, only the weather wasn't great and nobody had any money/ wasn't really in a great mood. so brittany and i met becky when she was done at work and i had chips at nandos. but then no plan materialized. so it wasn't a good sunday funday.

did however, have a three way skype chat after we left. can't really explain why we needed to skype after being with each other in person and deciding not to hang out, but at least the technology is there and works (for the future).
saturday, 30 july

a. 6 hours of working at monkey bizness.
b. plans to go out for drinks with ameer. we were supposed to meet at the bobby statue, but of course ameer was late. no worries though because as i was waiting i met a harpist/music teacher from south carolina. he was quite nice and we had a lovely chat. i helped him take a picture of him and his harp in front of the bobby statue and then walked down to help him out in front of the jk rowling elephant house cafe place. some guy convinced to play a tune outside the cafe, and it was nice to chat with him about teaching and music and things.

then ameer and i went over to kal and amanda's. it was a fun evening. even had a bit of a delicious curry.

had a bit of a struggle finding a place in town to go out, but after the 3rd attempt i went home.

it was really nice to hang out with ameer. i'm glad that he's been teaching (and therefore not stuck at monkey bizness) but i dont often get to see him. so that was cool.
