new questionnaires

thursday, 28 july

day of planning for data collection.
finished programming the 3 studies and uploaded them online: www.researchaboutlistening.com
got them linked on the social psychology network webpage: http://www.socialpsychology.org/expts.htm
and printed 100 paper copies of each.

plus they've been tweeted about, and hopefully will be added to Hanover's website of links. Sometimes trying to use social media is overwhelming to stay on top of. i just really hope it pays off.

triumphant return of apples to apples

wednesday, 27 july

we haven't played apples to apples in ages. i think possibly since i first moved into this flat with the perez family. (which is sad that it's been so long). but then again, brittany and i hardly ever have anyone in the flat.

so when we had cath and becky over for dinner on wednesday, we were able to play apples to apples. and it was a brilliant time.

mb scavenger hunt

wednesday, 27 july

wednesday became more fun at work with a scavenger hunt. becky has decided to add in games of different sorts to add something different to the days. i had missed all of the games until wednesday.
paired in teams we had to collect a number of items matching descriptions.
i wanted to win. gareth and i put forth a good effort.
and i accidentally got sara and andrea disqualified - andrea stole one of our items and i made a comment in passing about it, just really as a way of expressing if that was the way we were playing the game, then game on. only then becky decided stealing violated the rules, and they got disqualified. and then were not happy with me.

somehow kal and justyna beat us by one point. boo.

sunday funday bocce

first i managed to rotate my wheels (had skated 210 miles on them, so i figured it was time) and then went to skate at the research park. managed 6 minute miles (10 in an hour) and not to be attacked by the angry dog i passed multiple times so that was a win.

and went to the grocery store on the way back home as well.

brittany and i met becky in the park (by the links) to play bocce. had a few snacks - although we decided we should have done a full picnic, so that'll have to happen next time. new birthday bocce set is nice. has 8 balls - 4 teams of 2 so we could play with 3 people even. becky won a game and i won a game.

post-bocce we walked to s. luca for ice cream. we clearly weren't the only ones out enjoying the actual summer weather and sunshine with the idea of ice cream because there was a line out the door but it didn't take long. i had chocolate and mintchocchip on the wafer option they have. mmmm.

then i went with becky to help her with her website, only she realized she didn't have dreamweaver so we couldnt. so instead we ate some curly fries and watched some episodes of the IT crowd. funny comedy show. and always nice to hang out with becky.

had to do some work upon returning home, but all in all a fantastic sunday.

birthday

thursday, 21 july

went to cramond to skate along the promenade. lucky it was a nice day. and not too strong of winds, and the winds were going in the opposite direction from the last time i was at cramond. it has been far too long since i went to cramond to skate. but i again realized why; it takes so long to get there and back. just can't work that into an everyday exercise.

decided to treat myself to having a lunch from the wanna burger place. a legit american experience that was. had a nice, normal burger, fries of an american persuasion, and an A&W rootbeer float. delicious! plus there was american baseball on the tv -orioles against the red sox. and a student discount. very enjoyable.

decided to go to the art museum and to calton hill for the afternoon. so brittany and i headed first to the library so i could drop off my books (and pay my fine in tiny change, making the guy really appreciate me i'm sure). then walked down to the art museum. there were a lot of people on the royal mile, which clearly indicates i'm not ready for the onslaught of festival people. (let's just hope they're willing to fill out surveys.) went through the scottish section of the art museum.

it's nice to re-look at some of the scottish painters' interpretations of the scottish landscape after living here. while i could appreciate their beauty before (we saw most of the exhibit the first time we came up to edinburgh), i wouldn't have been able to see/pick out/notice/ appreciate the true likeness to the specific and distinct scottish nature of the landscapes. i think my favourite was the same piece though (and now i can't remember the painter or title). walked through the other floors as well.

from there we walked down princes street and up to calton hill. such a lovely day (lucky me), although on the chilly side for my normal experience of july.

we walked around the paths and then climbed the 170 steps of the tower.

a very cool view from the top all around. the ball drops at one (to match the o'clock cannon) for the ships on the forth, so i still want to go around that time to catch that. but i'm glad we climbed/went through the tower since we hadn't yet. (it was between that and climbing up to arthur's seat - but weather/wind wise i'm glad we went to calton hill.

we didn't exactly time things right so we actually had a bit of time before needing to meet at the restaurant. so we wandered through george/rose street to find this pub that has a cool inside that i hadnt seen. after finding that (we didn't stay) we went and hung out at the bookstore and then went to the restaurant.

becky and jane-marie met us for another delicious mexican meal.

i'm really glad we found tex mex II as everything i've had there is fantastic. it really is the best mexican option here. it's too bad i want to eat there all the time now. dinner was really great. and we walked home after.

19 & 22 july

meeting with adrian. after a month of my supervisor being away, i had developed quite a nice list of questions and concerns and issues along with my 3 questionnaires.
this meeting became a quick one shared with jane-marie with an additional meeting then for the 22nd.

our meeting on the 22nd was fairly successful. the questionnaires became ready for pilot testing = very exciting. so much work has gone into these. i can't believe it's been almost a month and a half which seems long typed out, but it's been a short intensive go at these new studies.

so input and 'finalizations' from these two meetings means progress. necessary progress as they need to be ready (goal wise) for the 5th of august.

mid july

spent a lot of time in the library reading articles and taking notes, forming thoughts, planning and downloading and adapting scales and measures, and trying to scaffold out some intros and lit reviews.

many hours spent in the library which has shorter hours and fewer people in the summer. not a bad place, since i'd park myself by the window so i could get a green view of the campus and sit on my laptop. although hopefully soon, our graduate student office will be put back together.

i do have to say, though, for july, it is far too chilly. i mean it's not july weather. definitely doesn't feel like summer.

perfect evening for lawn games

sadly i spent 8 hours of my day at monkey bizness. and for most of the afternoon i watched as the weather improved outside. so when i walked to and from tutoring through the park (and smelled the freshly cut grass), it struck me how perfect an evening it was for lawn games.

but sadly, i have no lawn games here. croquet, bocce, 'crazy balls', or even campos' weird one all would have been perfect.

and so i just found a decent looking bocce set on amazon (!!) that i'm REALLY tempted to order myself for 'my birthday' so i can bocce it up (this bocce set looks like a much better deal than the roughly same price child croquet set).

really want to play lawn games now!

thunderstorm

edinburgh had a legit thunderstorm today.
was great to hear, although i was on reception at mb trying to deal with people.

also, i enjoyed how the scottish are not familiar with their thunderstorms. it was interesting to watch them watch the storm. and get confused. the hail was interesting. but then they didnt know what was going to happen. and possibly not about the distance of the lightning and thunder.

and also i lost my voice slash have a weird voice as a result of talking all day. pretty much hurts and i'm not real excited about tomorrow.

library

was all set to spend the day in the library with my computer until i sat down and started my computer to find i managed to forget the power cord.
the day became 2 hours and then a trip to the gym. and then some work at home.

will have to remember the power cord next week. especially if we're still kicked out of our phd office room (which hopefully i'll get added to the emails to find out about...but that's a different matter)

tuesday

tuesday, 5 july, the day that took over the week in an odd way

had a 2 hour shift at monkey bizness in the middle of the day
and then i actually went to asda
and then it was staff night out to celebrate angela and nikki's birthday

odd day. evening out went on from pub to club.

and i enjoy that while i'll get a stamp many a place i'll go, nowhere else am i going to get a entrance stamp that says 'bangers & mash'
and that i "had to" spit on the lothian heart on the walk home. apparently i was honorary scottish to do that.

sunday skate

was a nice sunny actual summer day yesterday in edinburgh. was nice to skate. thought i had to go to work so i went to skate at the research park, but i would have liked to go to crammond. maybe this week i'll be able to get to crammond.

i also registered for the goodwood marathon and booked coach and train tickets. makes that more real. 6 weeks left for training.
