mexican

saturday, 19 november.

jane marie and i were talking about mexican and margaritas at school on friday, so we decided we should go on saturday for mexican. mmmm so delicious. went to the gym in the afternoon although i didn't feel well so that didn't work out the way i hoped, and managed to go to asda on the way back in time to make our 6 oclock reservation. couldn't get a hold of brittany but managed to find her at the cafe and bring her along too. (why we had to go at 6 - for a 3 people reservation- they need a bigger restaurant).

anyway, it was a nice dinner. and so tasty. good chimichanga and margarita. mmm i want another.

friday at uni

18 november.

read some stuff on multiple regression. and then spent far too many hours re-coding data. and more so 'copy and paste' background data over and over for hours. but now hopefully the data set is ready for factor analyses and then the multiple regressions.

plus i managed to get the remaining short surveys so i have all 400 of those. score.

and two strep kids came in to do the playlist study for credit and rob did one, so i really actually only need 4 more playlists. so so close with that.

went to the gym too. was hoping it'd make me feel better, but i didn't feel well while there.

surprise leaving party

thursday, 11 november.

shelly invited me to join the gambado/monkey bizness folks for a surprise leaving gathering for becky. went over to shelly and nicki's new place (hadnt been there yet) down at 'the shore' (near ocean terminal). it was a fine evening. it's been children in need week, so we watched the concert on bbc tv.

a super british evening. i'm actually glad i watched it with nicki, shelly, and becky. could to experience what the whole country pretty much was doing that evening. children in need is so big. it got me thinking about how small the uk is in relation to these things. like the day after the poppy appeal ends, kids in need starts. and they're huge things. and the presenters of the concert were david tennant and radio people. and everyone knows everyone. and the bbc is so huge yet so small. it's interesting.

anyway, then other people finally showed up after they finished work. it was a weird thing to know all about what they were talking about yet be so removed from it all. i mean i'm glad i'm not still there. but it was isolating, yet felt kind of nice to be hanging out in a group of people i know.

but it did mean that i was on the bus even more for the day. too much. ugh.

multiple regressions

after spending last weekend re-reading Adrian's ESM study to remind me of my hypotheses and actually writing out what i want to test with my data, i discovered that while i knew what i wanted to test, i didnt know what test to actually carry out in spss. so while i had hoped to present data analysis (at least something) to adrian on thursday, on wednesday i told him that it'd be more of me asking what tests to do. (he was fine with that luckily).

i did manage to make a few charts. just simple percentages stuff about the participants and about when (day/hours) music was vs. was not heard. but at least it was something to show adrian.

(thursday, 17 november)

so adrian and i sat down with the data and questionnaire questions and we determined i should use multiple regressions for a number of analyses (and some chi squares for some down the line). i didnt know how to compute those, so we spent some time looking at that. but it required a number of additional re-coding to happen first.
glad to have a direction to go with it. and it felt good to clearly be learning something - felt like being in a class at school which i haven't felt in awhile.

16 november

had dinner with becky, cath, and brittany. we tried to go to pizza express but the wait was ridiculous so we went to wanna burger instead. delicious burger and shake. mmm.

cath has a new job so that's the last time she'll be in edinburgh for business and with becky moving, it was probably the last time the four of us will be together. it was nice. (but sad)

participating table

tuesday, 15 november.

jane-marie and i decided to try sitting at a table to get participants for our research with a candy reward. a psychology student came up and offered to help and with him shouting to people we did get some participants. but mostly because he got the people he knew walking by to stop. definitely was because he was a familiar face/friend of people that made the difference.

and just like when we were at the festival, there's a 2 hour or so limit in really wanting to continue. plus after he left, we didn't get many people. we did decide maybe cupcakes would be a better draw. so that might be next.

i did get 8 people to do the playlist study, so the day was successful but it was because of cameron's help. also had elizabeth ( a first year student looking to get experience willing to help me) get a few more people to fill out the short survey. so that was good. i really just want to finish data collection on the playlist study. asap.

glazing

monday, 14 november.

pottery class. i have a good pile of things that have been fired. so it was a day of glazing. and i didn't get through all of them. i think it's the amount of time i have to spend stirring and then wiping off the bottoms. that takes too long and is obnoxious because then my finger prints start to ruin colors and/or the water runs off and whatnot. hopefully they turn out well. more to do this week so that they're done in time for christmas.

eye test

sunday, 13 november.

managed to go get my eyes checked. for free too. point to the nhs scotland healthcare for that one.

was a nice experience. had an irish doctor so that was fun to listen to. and found out my eyes are fine. i have a slight prescription but the prescription doesn't help my sight, so glasses aren't necessary. so there's that, but i don't know what the doctor will say (need to make another appointment i think).

also went for a lovely walk along the leith stream. wound up wandering into the stockbridge market even. where everything looked awesome and delicious / cool.

random articles

saturday, 12 november.

spent a good portion of the late afternoon reading (well brittany was reading out loud) random articles and news and things online. learned about people's final meals and other weird things. but was enjoyable.

also finished out a 'words with friends' scrabble game with brittany. late to that party (was real popular a year or two ago), i really enjoy playing this electronic, internet abled game of scrabble. (speaking of i think i have to play a word). i almost won - was leading, until the end where brittany ran ahead and won. now we're playing a second game. good times.

lost

spent time reading a book about ipod culture (a few years old so a bit outdated) in the hopes i would find inspiration for new projects. but found i was just feeling lost and uninspired and without the needed ideas. felt far too much pressure to design 3 new studies and so i met with adrian and told him so.

friday, 11 november

luckily he had a great response/plan. which actually reverted back to the plan i thought was going to be the plan for this month - analyzing the data from the week long ESM study. and maybe the lost feeling was really an overt manifestation of not really latching on to the other plan. but in any case i suddenly got a very large task plopped in front of me. even with all the re-coding and data cleaning i had already put in.

and i had been chipping away at getting the 400 people i needed to fill out the really short fix survey.

becky's moving

thursday, 10 november.

hung out with becky after work. went to mccowans (as usual). it was really nice to have dinner and hang out with brittany and becky. made worse because it won't be able to happen anymore. becky and david are moving to glasgow. so not far away, and we can go visit/stay in glasgow. but sad to lose a good friend i made in edinburgh.

pottery

monday, 07 november.

i really enjoy spending time at pottery. really would like to spend even more time. monday's are packed with going from potter to work to orchestra. long day without school work, but pottery is always the highlight.

guy fawkes day

saturday, 5 november.

brittany and i walked over to arthur's seat. we took our torches (india trip purchase) climbed up part way and found a spot that we could see out over the town. it was pretty neat to see all the little random fireworks and bonfires across the town. we didn't really know which direction to be facing, but were able to stand and move slightly to watch the ones that were closest. couldn't hear the music of course, but they were still good. and then we left to not be around with the drunk uni kids (case in point- bbc article) and then we walked back home and had mexican hot chocolate.

photo update

finally have accomplished posting pictures from february - october of this year.
it took a lot (mainly because there were 2 large trips and the races, and newcastle trip, and things to include) of time, but there it is. yay.

that's one major thing off the todo list.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

and now it's november

can't really believe that it's already november. feel like i should have more done as usual.
and it's definitely darker early although this week has been unseasonably warmer for the usual temperature.
i like it - smells and looks like autumn.

wish i had a nice camera to take pictures of the faraway autumn landscapes i see from the bus to and from work/school.

would like to take a walk by the canal/river to see if it looks nice there. hopefully will see some fireworks tonight.

halloween

31 october
monday.

went to pottery.

then to work for the halloween party. i went as rasta mouse. it was an alright costume idea. but i had made a guitar for it, but couldnt find it in the shed at work. that would have been better, but i still had my necklace and hat. not a lot of costume pieces but it recognized by the kids who had seen the tv show.

party went alright. we each had a game station that the kids went through. was a lot of work to set up and clean up but nice to do something different at work.

went to dinner with jane marie, brittany and marek for birthday dinner. went to nachos fiesta. was a nice evening.

tutoring

30 october.
sunday.

had a tutoring session. still tutoring in spelling. like the client and family. hopefully it's helping - hard to tell progress.

would like to have more than one client. really would like to.

am jealous of brittany's multiple clients.

tvthon

29 october.
saturday.

brittany and i went to marek's to watch a day of tv with marek, karen, and mark.

we finished watching the first season of falling skies and watched the latest freddy kruger movie and had snacks and dinner.

dinner and pumpkin carving

28 october.
friday.

had jane-marie and her boyfriend ian over for dinner and pumpkin carving last friday. we made curry and had a really delicious meal. ian had never carved a pumpkin before so that was enjoyable.

i made a mummy-ish carving in a tiny pumpkin. brittany did a ghost. jane-marie carved a 28 for her birthday - oddly enough also halloween like brittany. weird. and ian went with a face.

then we went and had a pint at the pub by the train station. it's got neat stained glass windows and we had never been so it was a good place to at least go once and see.

a really really fun evening in all.
